It still felt monumental an hour afterwards when Gareth Southgate came out on to the Spartak Stadium pitch and raised his fist to the England fans who had continued singing, a salute and also a farewell to 28 years of a nation messing up these great tournament moments. The first World Cup penalty Final test victory in four, just the second in a major tournament, the first won on foreign soil, and suddenly the English game is looking at Final test anew with also the possibility of so much more.
There was once talk of long-term goals, and a clock of destiny somewhere at the Football Association that counted down to Qatar but now the clock ticks down to 5pm local time in Samara on Saturday when a remarkable opportunity can be grasped.
Sweden are ranked 24th in the world, a spirited, well-organised bunch without a star among them who prefer the opposition to have the ball and seize the handful of chances that might come their way. In England reached the World Cup quarter-final and were up against the Brazil of Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho, four years later it was a more modest Portugal side and this time the opportunity is even greater.
Perhaps it was the same telling glance that Jordan Pickford saw in the eyes of the Colombia substitute Carlos Bacca for penalty No 5, jabbing an arm upwards to turn the ball away. Pickford was the hero of this shoot-out, a strong personality who ushered Colombian players away when they came to commiserate with Mateus Uribe who crashed the fourth against the bar.
The England players celebrate with Jordan Pickford Credit: It was the third minute of injury-time when the Colombia defender Yerry Mina climbed highest to head the ball down, seeing it bounce over Kieran Trippier who got his clearing header on the line wrong.
Without their playmaker James Rodriguez, Colombia for the most part were aggressive, disputatious and at times fortunate to survive with 11 on the pitch. England had handled it as well as could be expected and Harry Kane had scored his sixth goal of the tournament in just his third game, from the penalty that he had won 10 minutes after half-time.

Then finally it was Mina who got to the ball, a header which bounced in front of Trippier and which the full-back headed upwards into the net, as if he was trying to push it over the bar instead of heading out.
After the shoot-out was over and the stadium all but emptied, the players came out on to the pitch to see their families in the stands and wave to the supporters left in there.
It all felt so normal, like an autumn evening at Wembley — the noisy stands now becalmed. But of course it is anything but: Proud of this team, we left everything on the field for Colombia. Thanks to you for the support. Proud to be Colombian. And finally a win for ITV! Stones, the ball playing centre back, oozed calm up against Radamel Falcao and a wall of Colombian noise right from kick-off.
How refreshing it was to see an England team in the knockout stages of a major tournament keeping the ball better, passing with confidence and creating more spaces than the opposition - let alone winning a penalty shoot-out.Have a Quizizz game code?
